Travelling to Cambridge

Please note that there is no parking at the Department of Chemistry.  A limited number of parking spaces are available at Downing College for those staying overnight; these must be booked at the time of registration.

- by car

Parking in the City is expensive and frequently full; there is no on-street parking (other than of short duration) anywhere near to the Department.  For daily parking, the Queen Anne Terrace car park is the most convenient, being a five-minute walk from the Department; overnight parking is allowed (map).

The City is well-served by a range of Park-and-Ride options, but note that none of these allow overnight parking.

- by train

Cambridge is well served by direct trains from London King's Cross and London Liverpool St stations (the King's Cross trains are the fastest, with a non-stop journey time of around 50 mins).  Those travelling by cross-country trains from the Midlands or the North West may need to change at Ely.  Those using the East Coast Mainline will need to change at either Peterborough or Stevenage to connect through to Cambridge.  Other long-distance services will require a connection through London.  Eurostar services arrive at London St Pancras station, which is immediately adjacent to King's Cross and so very convenient for trains to Cambridge.

The rail station is a ten-minute walk from the Department of Chemistry (map).

- by bus

There are long-distance bus services to Cambridge from a variety of locations.  Most buses terminate at Parkside (on the edge of Parker's Piece), which is a five-minute walk from the Department (map).

- by air

London Stansted airport is by far the most convenient for Cambridge.  The airport has good connections to all parts of Europe and is mainly used by budget carriers.  There are direct train and bus links from the airport to Cambridge: click here to go to the airport's own information about onward travel.

London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports are further away.  For ground travel options to Cambridge click on the airport's name: Heathrow  Gatwick.  The fastest (and most expensive) option for travel from Heathrow to Cambridge is to take the Heathrow Express to London Paddington, the Underground (Hammersmith and City line) to London King's Cross, and then from there a direct train to Cambridge.

National Express run direct buses from Heathrow and Gatwick Airports to Cambridge.  These are slower than the train, but more economical.  See the National Express journey planner
