The graph on the right shows how the energy of ethane varies as the molecule is rotated about the C–C bond. The red dot shows the current value of the dihedral angle for the molecule shown on the left.


Angle increment: 10° 60°

  • Click and drag to rotate the molecule; hold down shift, then click and drag to zoom.
  • Set the angle increment using the radio buttons and then click on "+" and "-" to step the angle.
  • Alternatively, type the angle into the box and the hit the return key.
