This movie shows how the HOMO (MO7) and the C—Cl σ bonding MO (MO5) change during the reaction between H- and chloromethane. The HOMO starts out as a 1s AO on hydrogen and becomes a 3p AO on chlorine. MO5 starts out as the C—Cl bonding MO and ends up as a C—H bonding MO.

Speed:

  • Select which MO to view using the menu (be patient - there is a lot of data to load!)
  • Click "play once" to play through the movie once, or "loop" to run the movie continuously
  • Pause the movie with "pause" and resume with "carry on"
  • Alter the speed using the radio buttons
  • Alter the view by clicking and dragging in the usual way
