Weblink 10.4 Movie showing how key MOs change during the H- + methanal reaction

Back to Chapter 10 | Back to Chapter-by-Chapter List

This movie shows how the HOMO (MO7) and what is initially the π bonding MO (MO5) change during the reaction between H- and methanal. The HOMO starts out as a 1s AO on the hydrogen and ends up mainly as a 2p AO on the oxygen. The π bonding MO (MO5) eventually becomes a C—O and C—H bonding MO (note that this does not agree with Fig. 10.18 (b)). Various other MOs can also be displayed.
