Weblink 8.6 The cubic close-packed structure

Back to Chapter 8 | Back to Chapter-by-Chapter List

The structure consists of close-packed layers which repeat in the sequence ABCABC...  All the atoms in an A layer are pale yellow, and those in a B layer are pale green, and those in a C layer are pale blue. The red atom is surrounded by twelve nearest neighbours, the connections to which are shown by red bonds. The motif picked out in red is a face-centred cube, which can be viewed separately by selecting it from the drop-down menu.
