Weblink 4.3 How the form of the bonding and antibonding MOs vary with energy separation of the two interacting AOs

Back to Chapter 4 | Back to Chapter-by-Chapter List

This application shows how the energies and form of the MOs resulting from the overlap of two AOs varies with the difference in energy between the two AOs. From left to right we have the MO diagram, a plot of the wavefunction taken along the bond, and finally shaded plots of the two MOs (red indicates a positive value, blue a negative value).

  • Move the slider on the left up and down to alter the energy of the left-hand AO.
  • You can display the wavefunction, or the square of the wavefunction, by clicking on the buttons.
  • Please note that the shaded MO plots on the right will only update when the slider is let go, whereas the other graphs will change as the slider is dragged.
