Weblink 2.1 Three-dimensional representations of the 1s, 2s and 2p AOs cut into cubes

Back to Chapter 2 | Back to Chapter-by-Chapter List

This weblink shows a representation of the wavefunction corresponding to an atomic orbital. The nucleus is at the centre of the large cube, which is subdivided into many smaller cubes. Each small cube is then shaded according to the value of the wavefunction in the middle of that cube: darker shading means a larger value of the wavefunction, with red shading for positive values and blue for negative.

Change orbital:

  • Use the slider on the left to expose different layers.
  • Click on 'Run' to run through all the layers in turn.
  • Select the orbital to view from the dropdown menu.
