This applet shows how the energies and form of the MOs resulting from the overlap of two AOs varies with the difference in energy between the two AOs. From left to right we have the MO diagram, shaded plots of the two MOs (white indicates a positive value, yellow a negative value), and finally a plot of the wavefunction taken along the bond.

• Move the slider on the left up and down to alter the energy of the left-hand AO.
