Weblink 3.2 How the form of the bonding and antibonding MOs in H2+ vary with the internuclear distance

This applet shows how the energies and form of the MOs of H2+ vary as a function of the internuclear distance. From left to right we have a plot of energies as a function of internuclear distance, the MO diagram, shaded plots of the two MOs (white indicates a positive value, yellow a negative value), and finally a plot of the wavefunction taken along the bond.

  • Move the slider on the left up and down to alter the internuclear distance
  • You can display the wavefunction, the square of the wavefunction, or the difference density by clicking on the buttons.
